Summer school (or summer university ) is a school, or program generally sponsored by a school or school district, or provided by a private company, which provides lessons and activities during the holidays summer. Participation in summer schools has been shown to have a profoundly beneficial effect on educational progress.

In primary and secondary schools, the program is often used for improvement instructions, although some non-academic camp camp programs call themselves summer schools.
In high school, college or university, students may enroll in the class for credit to be accounted for in their average grade or transcript. Generally, these credits are in one of two categories: remediation or progress. For remediation, summer schools are used to replace credit lost due to absence or failure. For advancement, summer schools are used to earn credits for classes to accelerate progress towards a degree or to reduce the burden of coursework during the regular school year. Many universities offer short-term summer courses to attract local and international students, and these programs are often surrounded by social activities.
In the academic world, this term may also refer to a type of conference. Usually, well-established academics will give presentations on advanced topics in a field to graduate students. This type of summer school is often held nationally or internationally, and no credit is granted. Also, colleges or universities sometimes offer summer programs for teachers or other professional workers who wish to complete their professional or general education. Some summer schools are for the general public that does not involve exams and not for degree purposes.

Outside of North America, the term has a broader definition and refers to all ages and includes free time and other non-academic subjects, so, for example, a course on hedging might target older adults. In this region, Music Summer Schools, on the other hand, can be designed for school-age, college students, or adult or amateur professionals at various levels of achievement.
Summer schools can also provide students with an educational experience that will not be available to them in their normal school. This may include subjects not offered conventionally in schools (such as law, which is not usually offered in English schools but may be taught in summer schools), or the experience of studying in an ancient university. It can also combine more visits and field trips than is possible in everyday education, so some summer schools straddle the line between education and leisure.
English as a foreign language
Summer School is a popular choice for students of English as a Foreign Language, especially children. EnglishUK, the language teaching organization for EFL in the UK, has more than 470 members, many of whom operate summer schools. Summer schools often offer foreign language immersion, which has been known for its benefits for language learning. This summer school also has an appeal for students wishing to pursue higher education in English-speaking countries, who consistently rank top in the university league and get a high percentage of their students from abroad, as summer schools in the country -this country provides insight not only into English, but also into the culture that uses it. They can even provide guidance for such students in their university applications.
