Gameplay

In Shin Megami Tensei IV: Apocalypse, the player controls a demon hunter named Nanashi as they explore various locations including post-apocalyptic Tokyo and the medieval kingdom of Mikado. Arrangements, mostly devils, and a large number of mechanics are carried over from the predecessor of the game Shin Megami Tensei IV. Navigation is done from a third-person perspective through a local environment and uses an overhead world map. The battle takes place from a first-person perspective, and is triggered either through story sequences or encountering enemy sprites in the environment. The party earns experience and level points by winning battles and completing quests. When the protagonist reaches the level, he is awarded the skill points allocated to five different statistics that change the way he appears in battle. When in battle, Nanashi has a party with three demons and "Partner", one of the supporting players who have their own automatic turn and devil's own list, giving them different abilities.

During the battle, both the player and the enemy action are governed by turn-based Turn Turn System, a battle system carried over from previous entries in the Shin Megami Tensei series . The system revolves around exploiting physical or elemental weaknesses, and landing critical attacks: if a character attacks a weak point of another character or handles a critical attack, the party gets an additional turn, while if the attack is absorbed or blocked, they lose their turn. If a party member from both sides attacks the enemy, attacks the weakness or gets critical attacks, they will enter the status of "Smirk": Grin while increasing the damage of the characters, eliminating the weakness of their elements, and giving them most likely to avoid attacks. It also gives a boost to a certain skill a character possesses.

In addition to fighting them, demons can be persuaded to join the party through Negotiations, this being the only way to gather a party that can be played. If Satan agrees to join but Nanashi's level is too low, other demons are called to take the place of the fiend first. If Satan does not attack immediately, it is open to negotiation and can be persuaded to join. After part of the party, the devil can talk with, and can give fans status and give Nanashi new skills. Certain abilities also affect the immune system, magic, and elements of the devil, with certain types of attacks that incur a penalty or add additional fan status. Two or more devils can converge into new forms, giving new abilities. During fusion, players can choose which skills are defended and which ones are thrown away.

Synopsis

Settings and characters

Shin Megami Tensei IV: Apocalypse lasted in 2038, in the same setting as Shin Megami Tensei IV . Twenty-five years earlier, a devastating war was launched between the angels and the Lucifer army. To protect Tokyo from damage, large stone dome was created. Despite protecting Tokyo, resources become scarce over the years, while angels and demons dominate the human population. The protagonist figure, a teenager, was killed while demonic hunting. He was contacted in the afterlife by the Dagda demon, who offered to return the protagonist to life in exchange for his "GodSlayer". When he returned to life, he was manipulated by Dagda and Odin to release Krishna from prison made by YHVH, who formed the alliance of various polytheistic gods called the Power of God, for the purpose of claiming to save humanity and against the Merkabah and Lucifer. The storyline took an alternative turn from the beginning of the previous neutral route of the game: Flynn's main protagonist and his colleague Isabeau had chosen to be associated with the Tokyo people, while former Flynn friends Jonathan and Walter each hosted for the Merkabah, leader of the Power of the Angel of God , and Lucifer, the devil's horde ruler. The storyline does not follow the three-level morale alignment system of the previous game. There are some suffixes, but both ends are neutral; Game Law and Chaos endings serves as a summary of conclusions for the story.

The silent protagonist of the game is the Cadet Hunter named Nanashi, which can be renamed short in the story. Other playable friends include Asahi, a childhood friend of Nanashi who dreamed of being the right Hunter; Navarre, dead ghost Samurai; Nozomi, a authorized hunter from Dagda's mother, Danu to become queen of the fairies; Hallelujah, a young man working for Ashura-Kai; The younger brother of Gaston, Navarre and captain of the elite Samurai squad, known as the Crusader; Toki, a killer for the Gaea Ring; and Isabeau, Flynn's friend and main ally. Other major characters include Dagda, a cynical devil trying to overthrow God; Flynn, the protagonist Shin Megami Tensei IV and the champion of the Tokyo people; Merkabah, the leader of the angel of God; Lucifer, the leader of the devil; Krishna, the leader of the Divine Power; and Stephen, a mysterious ally in a wheelchair offering guidance to a party.

Plot

In post-apocalyptic Tokyo, Nanashi was killed by demons on a regular supply. In the afterlife, the devil named Dagda offers to awaken him in return for his service as his Godslayer. Shortly afterwards, Nanashi and Asahi who had been revived were manipulated into Krishna, the evil god who intended to destroy the universe and create it in his own image, whether humans wanted it or not. Krishna takes Asahi hostage to force Flynn to surrender to him, intending to force Flynn to become Godslayer himself to bring his dreams to reality. He also unleashed the dreadful snake of Shesha to begin harvesting the human soul for his plan. Nanashi and Asahi set out to defeat Krishna and Shesha and correct their mistakes. Nanashi and his friends defeat Shesha, infiltrate Krishna's base in Tsukiji Konganji, defeat Krishna, and rescue Flynn. The party then set out to defeat Merkabah and the angels and Lucifer and his demons. Nanashi had the choice to side with Merkabah, in which case Tokyo was destroyed and a kingdom of God was established in Mikado. He may also side with Lucifer, in this case Mikado burned to the ground and the world descends into anarchy. In both cases, Flynn leaves and remains free. If Nanashi remained on the side of humanity, massive fighting ensued, Lucifer and Merkabah were killed, and mankind emerged victorious.

During the festival, Flynn killed the surviving Hunters. He declares himself to be Shesha, reincarnated in the form of Flynn, and explains that Krishna faked his own defeat and used Shesha to manipulate the Hunters to get rid of angels and demons; The original Flynn remained in Krishna's clutches. Shesha kills Asahi and transforms into a Cosmic Egg, a gigantic object that will hatch into the new Krishna universe when the full moon rises. Feast of the Cosmic Egg Storm to defeat Krishna and His Divine Force once and for all. Inside the Egg, Dagda reveals his plan to plow the Cosmic Egg and create his own universe where all humans are completely free from each other, and demand Nanashi's help in his plans. Danu opposes it, and wants Nanashi to destroy the Egg. If Nanashi rebels against Dagda, Danu revives the good side of Dagda that is in line with their ideals, and Nanashi kills Dagda's dark side. True Dagda then awakens all of Shesha's victims, including Asahi. If the sides of Nanashi with Dagda, his friends turned against him, and he was forced to kill them all. In both cases, Nanashi then makes his way to the heart of the egg, where Krishna and Flynn are located. Krishna forcibly joined Flynn to become Vishnu-Flynn and fight with Nanashi, but he defeated him and separated the two.

If Nanashi sided with his friends, Flynn completed Krishna. Nanashi then destroys the heart of the egg, ending Krishna's plan for good. As the group begins to celebrate, Stephen appears and reveals that there is yet another enemy standing between humanity and true freedom: YHVH, the creator god. Stephen opened a portal to the YHVH universe, and Nanashi and Flynn attacked his territory. They are undergoing experiments from the second demon belonging to YHVH, and are deemed worthy to confront YHVH. Satan temporarily awakens old friends Flynn, Walter and Jonathan to help them, and the group fights and destroys YHVH once and for all. After that, mankind is finally freed from the gods and a new peace is forged by Tokyo, Mikado, and the devil.

If Nanashi sided with Dagda, Flynn was killed in battle and Nanashi executes Krishna. Cosmic Eggs hatch into Dagda's new universe, and he points to Nanashi as his new Creator. After that, Stephen appears and explains that the new universe can not fully bear fruit until YHVH is killed and the old universe is destroyed. Dagda awakens Flynn and Nanashi's preferred companion to brainwashed each as Godslayer and Goddess. After annihilating the remaining Hunters, Nanashi attacks YHVH's universe and kills him. The old universe died and was reborn as a new universe in which man is free from all outside influences, and Dagda fades away, leaving Nanashi to rule his new creation.

Development

Shin Megami Tensei IV: Apocalypse was born out of a discussion about what Team Maniac, the creator of Shin Megami Tensei IV , can do that is a characteristic of their team. In the end, they decided they wanted to create a completely new title compared to an enhanced rerun: because they wanted the game to "make everything clear", they added the word " Final " to the title. Production in the title begins after the development ends for Shin Megami Tensei IV in 2013. As part of their development, the team sees player feedback for the game to improve and improve some aspects while looking after the others. Their goal is to make "RPG number one in 3DS". Some of the original game's staff returned, including producer Kazuyuki Yamai and character designer Masayuki Doi. Satoshi Ohyama, who has worked on Shin Megami Tensei IV as the lead programmer, was commissioned as a director. The main theme of the story is making or breaking bonds with others, and the emergence of "inevitable reality", with the keywords in the story being "hatred". The element of the story is the idea of the gods of the opposing polytheistic gods who were dredged out by the monotheistic gods of Abraham. The game world and basic scenario were created by Kazuma Kaneko, while the script was written by Yusuke Miyata.

The Devil's design of the previous games is enhanced, including the characters Medusa, Merkabah and Lucifer. Doi designs god figures based on the traditions that surround them in their original mythology. The color of the polytheistic god is also influenced by the belief that surrounds the colors of their homeland. The human form of Merkabah and Lucifer is based on the idea of a monotheistic faction that draws strength from human conviction. The game's main protagonist was originally designed to be much older, with its adult design that brings to one of the unplayable characters of the game. Instead, the protagonist is made into a teenager so it's better to connect a game theme. Binding game themes is the fact that the main protagonist comes from a much lower class, less elite power than the protagonist of Shin Megami Tensei IV. The music is handled by composer Ryota Kozuka, who previously worked as a composer for Shin Megami Tensei IV. He works on Apocalypse in addition to his work set tracks for Persona 4: Dancing All Night . At the time of the game announcement in October 2015, about 90% of the development was completed.

Promotions and release

The game was first ridiculed through the main website for Shin Megami Tensei IV: when a specific hashtag has been forwarded via Twitter 15,000 times, a rocky surface that hides the title will break and reveal its secrets. The game was finally revealed on 5 October 2015. The game was released for Nintendo 3DS in Japan on February 10, 2016, and in North America on September 20, 2016. It was also released in the PAL area by Deep Silver, on December 2, 2016 in Europe and at 9 December in Australia. North American pre-orders and day copy launches include a set of three pin metal symbols in the form of peace symbols, anarchic symbols, and Dagda marks.

For Western release, subtitle is changed from " Final " to " Apocalypse ". The main task of the localization team in this case, once they get the Atlus permission to make the necessary changes, is to create a name that will give the same implications as the Japanese title while being more easily understood by Western players. Among the titles that need to be rejected are "End of War" due to copyright issues and "Holy War" because of potential reactions. Since the symbol "A" is inserted into the logo, they decide a word beginning with A. The title " Apocalypse " is accomplished after much discussion. For about two weeks during this process, the team considered dropping the game number as it had done with Nocturne .
