Primary education in the United States (also basic education ) refers to the first seven to nine years of formal education in most jurisdictions, often in elementary schools, including secondary schools. Preschool programs, which are less formal and usually not mandated by law, are generally not considered part of basic education. The first year of primary education is usually referred to as a kindergarten and begins at or around the age of 5 or 6. The following years are usually numbered as first class , > second class , and so on. Primary school usually continues until sixth grade, which students usually finish when they are 11 or 12 years old. Some elementary schools graduate after grade 4 or 5 and transition students enter high school.

In 2001, there were 92,858 primary schools (68,173 public, 24,685 private) in the United States.

Some private schools, and some public schools, offer pre-kindergarten (also known as pre-K) as part of the elementary school. The first three to five years of individual life can be the most critical period in their education (nursing school). During this period, young minds work on some physical, intellectual, and emotional development, including curiosity, character formation, personality, cognition, language skills, and social skills.

Since 1965, the federal government has promoted the growth of state-funded programs such as Head Start, a program under the US Department of Health and Human Services. In 2007, he served more than 22 million preschoolers and their families. Head Start works to educate all children in addition to providing health and nutrition services for low income families.

Primary School (Kindergarten until grade 1/2/3/4/5)

Students may attend public or private primary school 6 years or 7 years. Primary schools usually run from kindergarten to grade 5 or grade 6, depending on the area. After successfully completing their primary education students then proceed to high school, (high school in the UK) also known as junior high school. Depending on the school district, some students attend separate secondary schools, starting from grade 6 and then finishing grade 8 before they move to secondary school. In addition, students may have the option of attending primary school which includes all eight major grades. In this case, the student will immediately go to High School.

In most US primary schools, students have all the core grades of one or two homeroom teachers (compared to high school and high school students who typically have students rotating from one special teacher to the next teacher throughout the day). In some elementary schools, when funds and supplies are sufficient, additional teachers are employed to teach students in areas such as art and music.
