Histori
The school was named after the master-planned Green Valley community located in northern Henderson. The school opened in the fall of 1991, with Carroll Johnston as the first principal. The first class graduated in 1993. In 2008, Green Valley became the junior high school in CCSD to test its students randomly for drugs. This is because a student athlete was arrested with black tar heroin.
In 2004, United States Vice President Dick Cheney spoke about re-election meetings at the school gymnasium. Former US President Bill Clinton toured the school in January 2008 before the 2008 Democratic Caucus caucus.
In 2010, United States President Barack Obama held a City Hall Meeting at Green Valley High School.
In 2014 the former principal of Jeff Horn moved to the Assistant Head of Achievement Student Award on GVHS and Kent Roberts became the new headmaster.
Green Valley is also one of two International Baccalaureate schools in Nevada, the other being Valley High School, also in the Las Vegas Valley.

- The university baseball team won six straight titles from 1993-1998, the seventh country title in 2001 and eighth in 2003.
- The varsity girls golf team, with 144 consecutive wins from 1992-2004, holds the national school-level record for the most consecutive victory.
- Sports Illustrated has named Green Valley High School the best sports high school in Nevada for more than a decade.

Key Club
In October 1991, the Key Club of Green Valley has earned several awards and has been recognized as one of the most influential helpers in homes, schools, and local communities.
Theater
In 2006, Green Valley High School was one of the six high schools in the US for the premier "Main Musical Musical"; in 2008, it was one of four high schools in the US to present "High School Musical 2 Disney: On Stage." They were also asked to air live Disney musical again, "Camp Rock: The Musical" in summer 2010. In 2014, they aired Disney & Cameron Mackintosh, "Mary Poppins: The Musical", which runs from late January to early February.. In May 2014, their production "Mary Poppins" became a junior high school show to be featured at the Las Vegas Smith Center. It was also chosen to be one of several high school events selected across the country to perform at the Lying Stage in June at the 2014 Thespian International Festival in Lincoln, Nebraska.
Forensics
The forensic team has won sixteen direct titles of Clark County School District and ten state titles since 1995. "Forensigators" have students eligible for the NFL National Tournament every year since 1994. The 2009 National Forensics Tournament is held at Green Valley High School.
Fine Arts
The Department of fine arts was awarded the Status of National Grammy Signature in 2002, 2005 and 2012.
Movies
The movie club, GatorReels, has been making an online comedy show since 2008. They currently have 3 full seasons, currently entering the fourth season, and have more than 100 subscribers on their YouTube channel.
Varsity Quiz
The Varsity Quiz Team has won eight county championships since 1991, most recently in 2010.
Science Bowl
The science bowl team was completed in the top ten at DOE's regional Science Bowl four times since 2000.
Music
In 2015, the Green Valley Marching Band travels to Orlando, Florida to participate in the Disney World Band Parade.
In 2004, the band The Green Valley High Schools Symphonic was the first band in the state of Nevada to participate in the Midwest Clinic in Chicago, Illinois. It was performed at Carnegie Hall in April 2006 and November 2010. The band marched on the inaugural parade of Bill Clinton (1993) and Barack Obama (2009). Koutsulis was recognized as District School Teacher of Clark County District in 1998.
The choir department has accompanied the Las Vegas Philharmonic Orchestra several times and was invited to the Heritage Festival and other programs around the country.
The Green Valley High School Symphony was performed at the Midwest Clinic in Chicago, Illinois in December 2008. The Green Valley High School Marching Band was invited to line up at Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade in 2010. The Green Valley High School Marching Band was invited to perform in the opening ceremony of the parade for the Shanghai World Tourism Exhibition 2011 in Shanghai, China. Marching Band Green Valley High School has been invited to a number of prestigious ceremonies such as the first Easter Easter in Edinburgh, Scotland (2003) as well as New Year's Parade in London and Paris. The Madrigal Green Valley singer was invited among thousands of international applicants to appear at the American Choral Director's Association in 2005 and 2009. A select group of Green Valley High School choir members were invited to sing alongside the Rolling Stones on their 50th anniversary tour at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in 2013.
Newspapers
InvestiGator has been named the best high school newspaper in Nevada for 19 of the last 24 years, including eight consecutive years from 2004 to 2011. The recently won publication award in 2018.
Student Council
The Green Valley High School Student Council has won the Silver Star Award annually since 1993. The Council has also been recognized as the National Gold Excellence Council in 2008 and 2009.
Academics
In 2010 Green Valley High School ranked 859 in Newsweek Magazine's list of 1,000 high schools in preparation for college. It also appeared in the list four years earlier.
Scott Panik won the 2007 Presidential Award for Excellence in Mathematics and Science Teaching.
