Add Animation in PowerPoint Slides - YouTube

PowerPoint animation is an animated form that uses Microsoft PowerPoint and similar programs to create games or movies. Artwork is generally created using the PowerPoint AutoShape feature, and then slide-by-slide animations or by using Custom Animation. These animations can then be shared by transferring the PowerPoint files they create, and can be viewed with PowerPoint or Microsoft PowerPoint Viewer for free.

Custom Animations are a set of effects that can be applied to objects in PowerPoint so they will be animated in the Slide Show. They can be added under the Custom Animation function or through the use of Visual Basic for Applications (VBA). PowerPoint 2000 and earlier versions introduce basic effects such as Appear, Dissolve, Fly and so on. In PowerPoint 2002/XP and later versions, the Custom Animation feature is enhanced, adding new animated effects grouped into four categories: Entry, Emphasis, Exit, and Motion Path. The effect is then modified in PowerPoint 2010.

The transition is an effect similar to Custom Animation, but different because the transition can only be applied singly to individual slides as it changes from one slide to another and is limited in options. More slide transitions added to the selection in PowerPoint 2010.

Incoming effects can be set to objects so they come in with animations during Slide Show. Emphasize the effect of animating the object in place. The exit effect allows the object to leave the Slide View with animation. Motion Paths allow moving objects around Slide Show. Each effect contains variables such as start (On click, With previous, After previous), delay, speed, repeat and trigger. This makes animation more flexible and interactive, similar to Adobe Flash.

Animation Trigger

Animated Triggers are another feature introduced in Microsoft PowerPoint 2002/XP and later (but, to date, not for Macintosh). This feature allows the animator to apply effects that can be triggered when a specific object on the Slide Show is clicked. This feature is the basis for most of the PowerPoint games, which usually involves clicking objects to advance.

Games

Using hyperlinks and Animation Triggers, one can create games like Jeopardy! , using the tool to maneuver from the question to be answered. With this same principle, animators can also create more complex games similar to dungeon games or escape-the-room games. In this format, an animator can create a domain in which the player chooses to go to the right or to the left, or retrieve the object, and so on. The process takes time, but is generally cheaper and easier than using multimedia software such as Adobe Flash.

For more experienced users, Visual Basic for Applications (VBA) can be used to program animations with more flexibility.

Weakness

While animation can be made easily with Custom Animation provided in Microsoft PowerPoint, it may be much more tedious to complete projects in PowerPoint than in professional animation programs such as Adobe Flash because of the lack of keyframe and tweening in the previous one.

When effects like Emphasis Grow/Shrink and Spin are applied to objects, they may appear jagged or fragmented when previewing in a slide show. In addition, excessive use of this effect can decrease the performance of a slide show. The PowerPoint feature built in Hardware Graphics Acceleration does help in minimizing this setback. Graphic acceleration, requires a video card that supports Microsoft Direct3D. In addition, some animations may look different when played in older versions of PowerPoint, or none at all.

The PowerPoint 2000 and later versions introduce macro security to help protect the computer from malicious code in PowerPoint presentations. This causes to disable all VBA or macro codes by default, causing presentations that contain code can not run properly unless the viewer adjusts their macro security settings to the Low setting. The Security Alert in PowerPoint 2007 notifies the macro user in the presentation as soon as it opens, giving the option to run presentations with or without a macro enabled.

PowerPoint is not available for Linux and other operating systems, which means that unlike open-source alternatives such as SVG, animations are not portable on different computers or mobile phones. However PowerPoint animations can be provided with varying degrees of success through compatible tools such as LibreOffice Impress and Calligra Stage.
