Design
The S-MX is based on the S-MX Concept model first exhibited at the 31st Tokyo Motor Show in 1995, and is similar in appearance to the larger Honda Stepwgn, retracting substantially in length and height. While Stepwgn has three seating rows to accommodate eight passengers, the smaller S-MX has two rows of seats for four or five passengers. To maximize space for passengers, the S-MX uses front-seat seats and column shifter for four-speed automatic transmission (the only transmission available).
The S-MX is powered by a 2.0 L version of the Honda B-series engine featuring dual overhead camshafts and four valves per cylinder; it does not use Honda VTEC system. The peak power output is 128 hp (130 PS; 96 kW) @ 5,500 rpm and peak torque of 135 lbÃ, à · ft (18.7 kgfm à · 183 nÃ, à · m) @ 4,200 rpm. This engine is shared with Honda CR-V and Honda Stepwagon compact crossover. Similar to CR-V and Stepwagon, the S-MX is available with front-wheel-drive or optional four-wheel-drive.
As is the custom of minivans when the S-MX has only one back door (conventional) on the passenger side (left) of the vehicle. In fact, this feature is for the safety of passengers, to prevent them stepping out into traffic.
All chassis codes begin with RH1 for the Base and Lowdown models (Lowdown is also printed on the chassis plate). All 4WD models have chassis codes starting at RH2
