Histori

Its predecessor was founded as a Lincoln School in 1917 by the Rockefeller-funded General Education Council as a "pioneering experimental school for newer educational methods," under the supervision of Columbia University's Teachers College. In 1941, Teachers College incorporated the Lincoln School with the Horace Mann School, which operated as a demonstration school. When Teachers College closed a joint school in 1946, the parents of the Lincoln School educator established the New Lincoln School in 1948 to continue the tradition of progressive experimental education, concentrating on individual children, offering interdisciplinary core courses as well as options at baseline, and emphasizing art.

In 1956, the school acquired the former Boardman School on East 82nd Street and moved the Lower School (through second grade) to the campus, under the coordination of Terry Spitalny.

In 1974, the school was moved to 210 East 77th Street. The school joined the Walden School in Autumn 1988 to become Lincoln Walden New School , which was finally closed in Summer 1991.

Curriculum

The curriculum revolves around the "Core," a theme in which social science and English instruction are structured. Field trips and classroom dramas are integrated with Core. The core topics include the Netherlands in New York, China, India, Japan, and American History. Some Core programs are associated with value, while others vary from year to year. Science and Mathematics are taught in a more conventional way, even though the Mathematics class is smaller, divided into groups by level.

Very individualized instructions, with individual exploration and small working groups are highly recommended. Seating plans are generally informal, and most teachers are called by their first names, although they can choose a more formal address mode. The instruction of foreign languages, French and Spanish, starts in the fifth grade. English grammar is not taught.

Art is emphasized. The extensive studio art program is led by Lois Lord ("Lordy"), assisted later by Doris Stahl and others, exploring many media. The ceramic program, which features kilns and various glass materials, is run by Axieon's "Axie". Music is taught by Hugh McElhenny. Hugh uses a variety of instruments in teaching, and students play in autoharps, temple blocks, marimba, gongs, to name but a few. Song lyrics are displayed with a slide projector on the wall as the group sings, and the range of music ranges from folk songs and work songs to Broadway songs. All students, regardless of gender, take Wooden Shop and Home Economy.

While the class level is conventional, the Secondary School combines the fifth and sixth and seventh and eighth classes into two or three groups each. The values are labeled alphabetically, so Group A corresponds to first class, Group B through seconds... Group K, L, M up to seventh and eighth.
