History
The hill named city is 365 feet (110 m) above the town of Long Beach in the vicinity. Due to this height, it is used by local Tongva Indians for signal fires that can be seen throughout the surrounding area and even out to Catalina Island, 26 miles (42 km) away.
After Spain claimed Alta California ("Above California," or what is now the state of California), Signal Hill eventually became part of the first major rancho grant to be awarded under Spanish rule in Alta California. The Rancho San Pedro (Dominguez Rancho) land grant exceeds 74,000 hectares (300 km 2 ) as given to a soldier, Juan Jose Dominguez, accompanied by Junipero Serra, by Governor Fages through the authority of King Carlos III of Spain in 1784.
Between 1913 and 1923 an early California film studio, Balboa Amusement Producing Company (also known as Balboa Studios), is located in Long Beach and uses 11 acres (45,000 mÃ,ò) in Signal Hill for outdoor locations. Buster Keaton and Fatty Arbuckle are two Balboa Studio actors who record movies on Signal Hill.
Before the oil was found in Signal Hill, there were large mansions built on the hill itself, and in the lower plains were agricultural areas where fruits, vegetables, and flowers were planted.
Oil discovery
Signal Hill changed forever when oil was discovered. Hill will soon be part of Long Beach Oil Field, one of the world's most productive oil fields. On June 23, 1921, Shell Oil Company Alamitos # 1 also broke out. The gas pressure is so large that the gusher rises 114Ã, ft (35 m) in the air. Soon Signal Hill was covered with over 100 oil cranes, and because of its spiky appearance in the distance known as "Hedgehog Hill". Currently, many oil and pump wells are missing, although there are still some left. Signal Hill is now a mix of residential and commercial areas.
The city was founded on April 22, 1924. Among the reasons for the merger is avoiding annexation by Long Beach with its zoning restrictions and oil tax per barrel. Proven as a progressive city, Signal Hill was elected as his first mayor, Ny. Jessie Nelson. She is the first female mayor in California.
