History

Oxon Hill is named for the home of the colonial 18th century Thomas Addison (who was burned in 1895 but replaced in 1929 by a large neo-Georgian house called Oxon Hill Manor, standing on a cliff over the Potomac River). The current Manor is now owned by Maryland-National Capital Park and Planning Commission and is used for cultural activities, as well as hired for weddings and special events. "Oxon" stands for Latin Oxoniensis , which means "from Oxford." The area now known as Oxon Hill reminds Addison in the area near Oxford, England. The revolutionary patriarch John Hanson died while visiting the first Manor, and may be buried there in an unmarked grave.

Oxon Hill Manor, Butler House, Oxon Cove Park, and St. Ignatius Church is listed in the National Register of Historic Places.

Today society is divided by the busy Capital Beltway (I-95/495), and is near the Interstate Woodrow Wilson Bridge. The enlarged bridge opened on December 15, 2008, and the intersections of highways and ramps near the bridge were also aligned and reconfigured. Prior to that date, traffic retreated to Oxon Hill every day for decades as 250,000-300,000 vehicles a day crossed the Wilson Bridge. (Tens of thousands of white-collar commuters working in the Northern Virginia economic boom find that housing is cheaper in Prince George's County, Maryland.)

Oxon Hill includes many garden and townhouse apartments along with single-family homes built most of the 1940s when suburban construction began, until the early 1990s (except for newer National Ports condos), including the city that Forest Heights entered. In the previous decades, many residents were scientists from the adjacent US Naval Research Laboratory, Air Force personnel, or musicians in military bands, but very little now, because today's professionals prefer newer and more luxurious communities. Two major shopping centers of Oxon Hill ("Rivertowne", built around 1985 covering K-Mart, Safeway, Staples, Ross Stores Inc. and Home Depot, and "Eastover", built around 1955) attracted environmental customers and close buyers Southeast Washington, DC Eastover, located on the DC/state line, is at the center of many bus routes, some of them operating 24 hours a day, and have the Prince George County Police Station. The apartment community closest to the D.C line is informally referred to by their real name "Glassmanor", although the rental company has officially given them a new name. Somewhat strange features of the Oxon Hill community are nursing homes and large cultural centers, both operated for the numerous Filipino ethnic populations at Oxon Hill and Fort Washington. A Walmart is scheduled to open in 2014 but has been delayed for revision of the site layout.

Until about 1960, the community used the Washington mailing address, D.C., before getting their own postal appointments. Around 1980, the United States Postal Service separated two-thirds of the larger Oxon Hill farthest from Washington, D.C. and redefine the section as a new postmark, Fort Washington, MD. In order to sort the mail more easily at that time, the new postal line that separates the two Maryland communities is drawn along the existing postal code boundary. (The 20021 zip section of Oxon Hill remains Oxon Hill with new code 20745, while everything in the 20022 zip section of Oxon Hill around 1980 was automatically renamed the new Fort Washington 20744.) It is illogical that this partition re-assigns some areas which looks almost at the heart of Oxon Hill (like all roads Bock Road, Tucker Road, Murray Hills, and Brinkley Road, including some of the major prominent churches, the Rosecroft Raceway, the ice rink, and Ironically even Oxon Hill Middle School) to the letter of Fort Washington , which can cause confusion.

Parks and recreation

Rosecroft Raceway (founded in 1949) and Henson Creek Golf Course (course 9 Hole) are among Oxon Hill's recreational attractions; Rosecroft Raceway offers a limited number of horse racing races throughout the year, as well as betting on selected television simulation races from around the country (per article in Washington Post, May 20, 2010). The 1974 1974 Tucker Road ice rink from the Commission Park, at the Tucker Road Athletic Complex, was closed and expanded to year-round usage in 2005; opposite is the Tucker Road Community Center and nearby there is a private pool club, Oxon Hill Recreation Club (OHRC). OHRC has been operating continuously since 1958. A 37,000 square foot gymnasium and Southern Regional Technology & Recreation Complex were opened in 2013, at Bock Road. The Henson Creek paved trail riders motor-rider extends 5.5 miles (8.9 km) parallel with Henson Creek, a tributary to the Potomac River. Oxon Cove Farm (formerly Oxon Hill Children's Farm) is a free, educational facility operated daily for families by the National Park Service. The future is uncertain because it is located in the shadow of National Harbor. The ranch also has bike lanes used by some commuters to nearby government facilities. The indoor and outdoor public pools are also located on Allentown Road near Padgett's Corner in Allentown Splash, Tennis and Fitness Park.

Oxon Hill is also the location of National Harbor, a major development on the Potomac River: a mixed community of 7,300,000 square feet (680,000 m 2 ) including 2,500 housing units, 4,000 hotel rooms, 1,000,000 square feet (93,000 m 2 ) from retail, upscale dining, and entertainment, and 500,000 square feet (46,000 m 2 ) from the class- "A" office space, along with one of the marinas the largest on the Potomac River and 2,000 Gaylord National rooms at Potomac Resort and Convention Center, the largest hotel in the entire Washington area. The first phase of development began to open in April 2008, and is currently entering the second phase.

The MGM National Harbor Resort Casino is currently being built at the entrance to the development of National Harbor. The 950 million dollar project is scheduled to open by the end of 2016.
