In the United States, the academic year usually has about 180 school days for K-12s, running from scratch (Northern Hemisphere) falling to the beginning of summer. Colleges and universities often have shorter years. School holidays (also referred to as vacations, breaks, and breaks) are periods where schools are closed.

Public schools for K-12 classes usually have the following holidays and holidays:

  • All federal and state holidays .
  • Thanksgiving Holiday - Fourth Thursday in November. Usually Black Friday is also a holiday marked "Days After Thanksgiving" and the previous Wednesday is often a holiday or the day of dismissal. Some schools give students the entire fourth week of November.
  • Christmas Vacation/Holidays - Usually no classes on Christmas Eve and December 23 may be half a day. The break lasts until the first business day in January after New Year's Day. In the years where January 1st falls on a Sunday (like 2017), New Year's Day is officially celebrated on Monday and classes begin on Tuesday, January 3rd. Some areas cover the entire week of Christmas or New Year's holiday.
  • Fall - (not taken in all parts of the country) one to two weeks in September or October, sometimes coinciding with Labor Day.
  • Winter holidays - (not taken in all parts of the country) a week in February or March, sometimes coinciding with President's Day.
  • Spring break - a week in March or April (usually around Easter).
  • Summer vacation - About 10-11 weeks, either from late May to early August, early June to mid August, or late June to the day after Labor Day in early September, - depending on region and country. Except that students with disabilities may receive special education services during the summer as mentioned in the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act. Rest usually includes Independence Day.
  • Religious holidays such as Good Friday, Jewish holidays, and Islamic holidays - depend on school demographics.
  • Many public schools also have Inactive/In Day Service (Convention)/Professional Days 2 or 3 days per year, usually for professional development.

Schools that offer summer camps are also off on Independence Day even though regular school years generally include this holiday as part of a larger summer vacation.

Most colleges and universities have the following vacations/holidays:

  • Thanksgiving Holidays - End of November (Thanksgiving & amp; later, and most often Wednesday)
  • Christmas/Holidays & amp; Winter holidays - December 23rd to mid/late January (winter term classes may be offered after New Year).
  • Spring Break - a week in March or April, usually after Easter or Patriot 'Day, and involves warm weather travel tradition
  • Summer Break - Early/mid May to the day after Labor Day in early September (summer term classes may be offered).
  • Large federal and state holidays (Person can observe religious holidays) (such as Anniversary, Veterans Day, and Columbus Day).

Most colleges and universities divide the school year into two semesters. Fall semester often begins the day after Labor Day in early September and lasts until mid-December. Spring seminars usually begin in mid or late January and last until May. Winter and summer classes may be offered in January and May-August.

Unscheduled holidays

Weather-related cancellations, such as snow days and hurricane-related closures, may affect the school calendar, as well as local emergencies such as major water lull, gas leak, structural problems, or shootings. Some K-12 districts build on predicted snow days, although in warmer climates there is usually nothing scheduled. If the expected amount differs from the actual number of days canceled, the start of the summer vacation may be adjusted to keep the school year the same. If there are too many days canceled, some districts will still start the summer vacation from moving too far by holding a school during the scheduled spring break, or by holding schools on Saturdays, professional development days, or other scheduled holidays. If the cancellation reduces the number of instruction days below the minimum number of countries, the district may decide to simply drop the missed day of the academic year.

Colleges and universities establish their own cancellation policies, and usually do not add to the day of makeup, although they also cancel the school less frequently, especially for residential colleges.

If different days have different schedules (eg math and English on Monday, science and art on Tuesdays), the rest of the day's schedule can be adjusted to ensure all subjects maintain the same number of study days per year.
