Plot
Promised Land has an ensemble player, featuring Russell Greene (Gerald McRaney) who is on a divine mission. In the premiere episode, broadcast as a special episode of Touched By an Angel, Tess (Della Reese) and Monica (Rome Downey) angels asked Russell, recently dismissed from his work at the factory, to "redefine what it means to be a good neighbor and reclaim the American dream. "To do this, Russell and his family travel around the country by crashing the Airstream trailer, helping people in need, finding work, and learning from their experiences. The Russell family included his wife Clare (Wendy Phillips), who was licensed to homeschool their children while they were on the road; his mother Hattie (Celeste Holm), who updated the hand embroidered maps to show all the places they went through; and his teenage son, Josh (Austin O'Brien), Dinah's daughter (Sarah Schaub), and young nephew Nathaniel (Eddie Karr), left behind by troubled Russell brother Joe (Richard Thomas). Erasmus is an old family friend living in Chickory Creek, a small town in Kentucky where Hattie grew up. Families often return to Chicory Creek to celebrate holidays and breaks. Sometimes they are helped by Tess or other angels when they try to help people overcome their personal problems or revive their past faith.
At the start of the second season, Claire discovers that she is pregnant, but tragically their baby girl, Grace, died shortly after her birth in the last episode of the season. In the third season, the family decided to settle down and move into a shabby little house in a poor neighborhood in Denver, Colorado. Russell convinced the owners to let them stay there free of charge in exchange for the renovations he made at home and Claire got a job at a guidance counselor at a local high school where Josh and Dinah enrolled as students. Russell volunteered to work at Ridley Center, a neighborhood youth center. Living next to Greenes in Denver is Shamaya and her teenage brother, L.T., a former gang member who is having trouble with a straight path. Bobbie, a mother who is not married to a baby boy, is Josh's boyfriend, and Margot (who likes 1950's vintage clothing) is Dinah's friend. In the final episode of the series, Hattie marries an old family friend and Russell leaves the Ridley Center and takes a job as a policeman.
Most of the third season was spent in Denver, Colorado but - as Angel was touched - filmed in Salt Lake City, Utah.

Production
The premiere episode was filmed in the spring of 1996 by the crew Touched by the Angels at the end of the second season's production. Pilot episodes occur mainly in the fictional city of Chickory Creek, Kentucky but the actual location is Springville, Utah.
Since Touched by Angels resumed production for the third season, the new crew was hired for the production of the Promised Land series. Meanwhile, parts of the pilot episode were rewritten and two characters from the original pilot episode were rearranged. Originally, part of Hattie Greene was played by Peg Phillips. Celeste Holm replaced him as a player. Part of Nathaniel Greene was also rearranged with Eddie Karr playing a role in the new version of the pilot and the whole series. The newly hired crew from Promised Land spent six days focusing on the pilot episode in July 1996.
This series of stories calls on the Greene family to travel throughout the United States, so northern Utah serves as a standing place for many states. As with Touched by an Angel, the crew's shooting location is usually within a two-hour drive from downtown Salt Lake City. However, during each of the first two seasons, three episodes were filmed in and around Saint George, Utah. During the third season, three episodes were filmed in and around Natchez, Mississippi (in August and September 1998).
Broadcast
The series aired Tuesday at 20:00 (EST) on CBS for its first season and Thursday at 20.00 (EST) for the rest of the trip.
DVD release
In May 2018, Visual Entertainment released the Completed Land-Complete Collection on DVD in Region 1 for the first time.
