A primary school (or primary school in American English and often in Canadian English) is a school where children receive basic or basic education from about five to twelve year, coming after preschool and before high school. (In some countries there are middle to high school stages between primary and secondary education.)

In most parts of the world, basic education is the first stage of compulsory education, and is usually available at no cost, but can be offered in independent schools that pay fees. The term school level is sometimes used in the US, although this term may refer to primary and secondary education.

The term primary school comes from the French ÃÆ' Â © cole primaire , which was first used in 1802.

• Primary school is the preferred term in Great Britain, Ireland and many Commonwealth countries, and in most publications the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO )./li>
• Primary school is preferred in some countries, especially in the United States and Canada.

In the United States, "elementary school" may refer to a school with a kindergarten grade up to second or third grade. (K-2 or 3). In these cities, "elementary school" includes grades three to five or grades four through six.

In some places, elementary schools have historically been further subdivided between lower primary schools ( LP schools ), which are elementary schools, and higher primary schools ( HP School ), which was established to provide more practical instruction for poorer classes than those provided in secondary schools.
