Spa filters work continuously to keep the debris and sediment from the water in the spa pool.

The technology of cartridge filters was discovered in the mid-1960s, the cartridge filters have large surface areas that allow them to operate for long periods. The filter cartridge system also allows better water flow - thus, putting less pressure on the pump filter. This type of filter is also most easily cleaned by using high pressure water flow from the hose. Filters are made of polyester or other materials that can provide superfine filtration surfaces. The fold is the key to filter operations. Rigid creases, or creases, allow a large amount of material to be used in small containers. The more materials used, the larger the available surface area to catch dirt or debris from water. Cloth captures and holds dirt until the filter can be cleaned or replaced. There are 3 parts for cartridge filter construction, end cap (made of plastic) core structure to provide strength (most often PVC) and pleated media (most often polyester with fixed pore structure continuously graded, this cartridge provides pre and end filtration in cartridges together resulting in lower overall filtration and disposal costs.

Two methods are used in the spa in relation to cartridge filters, pressurized tubes, where the spa filters are not visible when in use, and a second stream through the system, which is visible during use and often the spa has 1-5 filter cartridges in this design. The flow through a filter system in spas and hot tubs is the preferred method of design today for all brands of hot tubs.

Cartridges can filter anything up to about 5 to 10 micrometers in size. In most areas the cartridge filter is cheaper than the diatomaceous earth filter but the price is more expensive than sand filters. But filter cartridges are more popular because of the minimal care involved. In some cases it may be enough to spray the filter cartridge several times during the swimming season in order to keep it functioning properly. Others may need to soak the filter in the detergent or replace it. In any case, maintenance takes only a few minutes to operate the filtration system.

There are over 500 forms and sizes of spa filter cartridges currently in use.

Diatomaceous earth filters

Fossils of diatom remains are mined as Diatomaceous ground; white, non-perfumed powders are widely used in industrial filtration applications and are also available for the use of spa pools in cartridge format.

Ceramic filtration

Ceramic filters have been used for water treatment for several centuries. While they are marketed for centralized water treatment systems, most of the ceramic filters are now being manufactured for point of use use.

Filter cleaning and maintenance is very important; so like other cheap points of the usage system, it is best to combine with educational programs about safe storage, filter cleaning, and other recommended practices. The advantages of ceramic filters are their ease of use, long life (if not broken), and low cost. Losses include the possibility of re-contamination of stored water because there is no chlorine residue and relatively low flow rates - usually 1-2 liters per hour.

Sand filtering

This filter uses sand as a filtering media. Sand filters look like big balls and they hold hundreds of pounds of sterile sand. The water flows to the top of the filter house and goes down through the sand beds where sharp edges of sand catch particulate matter. In micron-to-micron comparisons, sand filters remove the smallest particles of dirt size ranging from 20 to 25 microns. However, sand filters are certainly efficient enough to keep almost all the pool clean.

In order for the sand filter to continue to function, depending on the filter size, you should clean it as often as once a week. Treatment means backwashing where the flow of clean water is returned to the filter. The problem with this, however, is that the backwash water is just wasted. A typical backwashing session can cost several hundred gallons of water - water that must be replaced.
