The periodic table: from its classic design to use in popular culture
src: images.theconversation.com

Classical elements have been frequently used in pop culture in genres such as fantasy, literature, movies, humor, television, video games, comic books, toys and even music. Usually characters or characters associated with one or more of the four classical elements (air, water, earth and fire) are common to most ancient philosophies (especially the Greek, Hindu, Buddhist and Japanese or Chinese traditions), either through the special powers it provides. , the ability to mimic elements, or other means. Sometimes the fifth element is included, such as ether (also known as Quintessence), void, as in the movie The Fifth Element, something else entirely. Light and/or darkness are also often described as elements beside the four classics or in the place of one of them.

Resepsi

The classical elements and their use in literary history have served as the subject of numerous published books. In the Element: The Earth's Ice Flame (How to See the Artist) , Colleen Carroll examines "how the four elements have been described in the artwork from different periods and places." In The Legend of Earth, Ice, Fire and Water , Eric Hadley and Tessa Hadley provide "a collection of myths and legends from different parts of the world about the four basic elements without which life would not be possible." According to Weekly Publishers , in Earth, Fire, Water, Ice , Mary Hoffman and Jane Ray collect "excerpts of factual information, myths, stories, poems, and musings on this, volume of the four classical elements. "

The acceptance of classical elements by scholars and mainstream criticism varies considerably, largely dependent on the medium and/or use of classical elements. For example, the classical elements have functioned as significant plot elements in the various fictional universes of Mortal Kombat. Blaze, the fire element, appeared in several Mortal Kombat games, including as the last boss in the latest game. The Movie features the Elder gods based on four elements, mentioned painfully in the Christian commentary.

Important example

AdventureQuest

In AdventureQuest , there are 8 elements, namely Fire, Wind, Earth, Ice, Water, Energy, Light, and Darkness, expressed in constant struggles and each ruled by the "Tuan element" - the element is capable of performing various amounts of damage to characters or monsters. The basic guide to this is that creatures made of ice are usually weak against fire.

Adventure Time

In the animated TV series Adventure Time , there are four main elements: ice, fire, candy, and mucus. First introduced in the episode of Evergreen , then more explored in the episode 7 season Elemental and in the miniseries Elements . These four elements begin to exist from the very beginning of evolution on this planet, presented to special individuals from prehistoric times to the days of the Land of Ooo, in which characters; Pim's Stomach; Princess of Fire; Princess chewing gum; and Slime Princess, is the actual incarnation of the ancient elemental.

Alchemy Index

The Alchemy Index is the fifth studio recording of Thrice, a four-disc album concept shared between two releases, the first in October 2007 and the second in April 2008. The band originally planned to release four discs at one time, each disc with six tracks representing one of four classic elements: Fire , Water , Earth , and Air .

Recorded at the home of Teppei Teranishi guitarist in Orange, "Alchemy" is full of experiments. Inspired by Radiohead, Botch, Pelican and ISIS among others, Thrice has produced an effort that can be very heavy and melodically calm, as evidenced by the muddy "Fire" baritone guitar work and drum samples, synthesizers and pianos on "Water." Kensrue says " Earth, "recorded sounding as if the listener was in the room where it was being played, features acoustic guitar, upright bass, banjar, piano, tambourine and some horns. Water, the singer said, is the most dynamic and ties the other three recordings together.

The last song on each disk is written in the form of a soneta, which describes the human relationship with each particular element. Each of these songs is in the iambic pentameter, with the rhyming verse concluding. This final couple also contains the same vocal melody and cord progression to each other, even though they are in different keys. The Artwork for the Album was designed by Dustin Kensrue.

Angels & amp; Demons

In the thriller novel Dan Brown Angels & amp; Demons, the antagonists kidnapped four cardinals on the night of the conclave and branded them with ambigrammatic words "Earth," "Air," "Fire," and "Water." He then kills each cardinal using methods based on their respective elements; Cardinal Ebner, who was branded "Earth," suffocated with dirt in his throat. Cardinal Lamasse (Air) died because both of his lungs were stabbed. Cardinal Guidera (Fire) was burned alive, and Cardinal Baggia (Air) drowned in the Fountain of the Four Rivers. Then, the Camerlengo Carlo Ventresca was branded with the Illuminati Diamond - a diamond shape made of words for the elements mentioned earlier (also ambigrammatically). He then reveals that he has done this for himself.

These brands and killings also appeared in the adaptation of the movie Angels & amp; Demons , except Cardinal Baggia is not dead; he was even rescued from the drowning and eventually became the new Pope. Also, the fifth brand in the film is not the Illuminati Diamond element, but the papal symbol of the two locks crossed.

Avatar: The Last Airbender and The Legend of Korra

In the animated series Avatar: The Last Airbender and the sequel series, there are only four mystical martial arts, allowing certain people called "benders" to freely have control and manipulation of the four elements through real - the tradition of martial arts life: Waterbending, Firebending, Earthbending, and Airbending. This is more based on Western elemental structures and/or Japanese elements, without a style based on Aether/Void. However, there are some overlapping elements such as Blood, Lightning, Plants, and Metals are unique sub-special abilities of the other four main elements.

Airbending is a martial arts ability that controls and manipulates the elements of Water. It is mainly based on real martial arts from Bagua Zhang. Airbending focuses on avoiding and avoiding attacks.

Earthbending is a martial arts ability that controls and manipulates Earth elements. It is primarily based on real martial arts from Hung Ga, but there are exceptions like Toph who use Southern Martial Kung Fu Pray. However, it may differ due to the fact Toph has learned his Earthbending from Badger-Mole (bending of natural animals, and mentioned in the show as the first earthbenders). Unlike Airbending, Earthbending is based on long-lasting attacks and restraint. At least one character, Toph, can use earthbending to control and manipulate metals easily by focusing on the fouling.

Firebending is a martial arts ability that controls and manipulates fire, fire and heat. It is mainly based on North Shaolin, here mainly the Northern Shaolin Style. Firebending special forms can be used to control and manipulate lightning. This is done by dividing the yin from Yang from electricity, such as dividing the positive and negative charges. The charges try to merge again, as lightning moves from one charged object to another (Like a positively charged cloud to a negatively charged ground or vice versa).

Waterbending is a martial arts ability that controls and manipulates the water element. This is mainly based on T'ai chi. Firebending is against Waterbending, because the former prefers to attack first and hard until weakness is found while the latter awaits the opponent to attack first and then direct their attack. While other forces seem incapable of controlling and manipulating the various shapes and phases of their original elements, waterbenders can alter the water phase, controlling and manipulating water in solid form (ice, snow, hail), liquids (pure water) and form gases ( fog, steam, clouds, fog, and moisture), or even taking liquid water from air, plants, animals, or even humans. Some are even able to control and manipulate others (by means of rare and scary capabilities of blood-eating) under full moonlight, when waterbenders are at their strongest and full potential. This is done by controlling body fluids in the bodies of other beings and thus controlling them to offer waterbender offerings such as dolls.

Each season, or book, from Avatar: The Last Airbender is named after one of the classic elements: water, earth, and fire. The first season Legend of Korra corresponds to the last element, air.

In the storyline, the main character - Toa - is a soldierlike form (usually depicted as a six-member team) each representing and having the ability to create, manipulate and absorb elements, one of the six "main" elements: Fire , Water, Air, Earth, Ice and Stone. Toa and other less common "secondary" elements are later introduced, these include Light, Shadows, Gravity, Sonics (referring to sound), Lightning, Iron, the Green (referring to plant life), Plasma, Magnetism and Psionics (referring for mental ability). Toa-Matoran colleagues resemble their village and their Turaga elders - possessing innate or weak faculties, while they all live as tribes in the environment associated with each element. Many other species in their universe also have elemental power. In the subsequent storyline featuring different peoples, the characters of the Agori villagers and Glatorian warriors lacked elemental abilities, but lived in tribes associated with Fire, Water, Rimba, Ice, Stone, Sand, Iron, and Earth elements. In a reboot of the story, the main elements of Fire, Water, Earth, Ice and Stone are preserved, however, Water has been replaced by Jungle, which now includes wind and vegetable forces.

Captain Planet

Captain Planet and Planeteers , an animated series from the early 1990s, about five teenagers, each with a magic ring that controls the elements. When their forces join, they create a superhero named Captain Planet, which uses the power of all elements.

The personality of each Planeteer (and sometimes, appearance) reflects their element. Level towards, Kwame (Earth) brown skin serves as a leader, and holds the group together. Growing up in a village in Africa, he knows a lot about soil and plant life. Wheeler (Fire), who has red hair and is more temperamental and impulsive, acts as a team martial spirit. Linka (Wind) has a passion for bird life, while Gi (Water) is a marine biology student and has skills in water sports. The fifth element is named "Heart", and the Ma-Ti ring controls it. Ace Morgan is Red Ryan's red-haired (air) pilot is a brave (fire), Prof. Haley is an oceanic explorer (water), and Rocky Davis is a wrestler (earth). While symbolic relationships between individuals and elements can be seen, it never really plays a strong role in the development of character personalities, which take many twists and turns that are not associated with any archetype.

Digimon

Eponymous creatures in Digion often have attacks and characteristics related to the elements. This theme may be most emphasized in the fourth season, when the Ten Legendary Warriors are based on elements of fire, light, ice, wind, thunder, earth, water, steel, wood and darkness.

The second and third seasons introduced the Sovereigns Digimon, which is based on the animal Wu Xing. For unknown reasons, the Qinglongmon element is water and Xuanwumon is wood, whereas in Wu Xing tradition, the opposite is true.

Dungeons & amp; Dragon

In Dungeons & amp; Dragons family role-playing game, the idea of the Greek element is used as a symbolic building block of reality; four Elemental Planes form a metaphoric ring around the "Prime Material Plane" which contains all the "everyday" game settings (Faerun, Greyhawk, and others). In all editions of the game there is the addition of Positive Energy (Creative/Constructive) "above" Elemental and Prime aircraft, as well as Negative (Destructive/Necromantic) Aircraft "under" them. In the more complex cosmos of the 2nd Edition and beyond that there is another plane in which six main element planes are next to each other. The Paraelemental Planes are manifested where the elemental planes overlap - Fire and Earth become Magma, Earth and Water form Ooze, Air and Air join as Ice, and Water and Fire unite as Smoke (Fire/Water and Earth/Water spouse opposed not touching ). The Quasielemental Planes are formed whereby Positive or Negative Aircraft borders on an elemental plane; they express the abundance or intensification of the nature of the element, or its destruction or absence. Positive Quasielemental Expressions of Earth, Water, Air and Fire are Minerals, Steam, Lightning and Radiance, respectively; Their negative counterparts are Dust, Salt, Vacuum, and Abu.

Earth, Wind & amp; Fire

Music group R & amp; The popular B, Earth, Wind & amp; The fire is so named because the founder of Maurice White is Sagittarius, whose elemental qualities are Fire (hot & dry), but the quality of summer in the north and south is Earth (cold & dry), and Air (hot & wet); (hence, the removal of water).

In the Jennifer Estep series of Elemental Assassin , the four "major elements" are Water, Fire, Ice, and Stone. To be considered a true element, one must be able to manipulate one of these substances. Nevertheless, there are other rarer elements derived from the four primers: Metal (derived from Stone), Electricity (originated from Water), Water (derived from Ice), and Acid (derived from Fire). The rarest element of all, however, is a talented person in several elements, such as the protagonist of the Gin Blanco series (Stone and Ice).

In both series, each Brilliant was carefully guarded by each of the kingdoms in Encantadia. The fairy kingdom, Lireo, east of Encantadia, is the keeper of the Air Brigade (Gemstone of Air). Adamya, the elephant kingdom of the south is the keeper of the Brilliant Water (Gemstone of Water). Sapiro, the northern kingdom of brave warriors and physicians, maintains the Diamond of the Earth (Gemstone of Earth). Hathoria, an arrogant and brutally brutal empire and orc in the west, is the keeper of the Brilliant Fire (Gemstone of Fire). But after Hathoria tried to seize all the gems, they were handed over to Queen Mine-a of Lireo to be kept. Later, four daughters of Queen Tambang-a became guardians of this gemstone.

Fantastic Four

In the Fantastic Four series comic series, each of the four characters has the power associated with the Greek element. The two most obvious links are the Torch of Man (whose fire controlling power is best expressed through his self-image as a burning human being) and the Object (which resembles living things of stone and stone). Mister Fantastic, while lacking water-based strength, does have a liquid shape. The invisible force of invisibility and force fields evokes the power of wind and invisible air. This is especially true in Neil Gaiman Marvel 1602 , in which the Visible Woman is permanently invisible and without weight.

It should also be mentioned two clear elemental personalities (Torch of Humans and Things) tend to have personality traits people tend to associate with their own elements. Johnny The human torch is very hotheaded and impulsive, with a brash personality, contrasting this with a more sullen, reliable and powerful Ben the Thing.

Perhaps the closest character to realizing Air at the Fantastic Four is their companion (and sometimes rivals) Namor Sub-Mariner, which becomes unbeatable when underwater, can breathe well above and below the surface, and rule Atlantis.

Hufflepuff, whose symbol is a weasel, corresponds to the earth, and their common space lies beneath the school. The Slytherin liquid snake symbol corresponds to the water, and their common room is located just below the lake. Each of these elements is represented in Kingdom Hearts 358/2 Days by the negative status of the disease opposed by members of each element (eg the "blind-interest-interest" status effect, opposed by Marluxia).

In the world of Naruto, there are certain people who can mix elements of elements into new jutsu elements. So far, the expression shown is ice, wood, lava, storm, boils, dust, heat, explosion and magnetism. Ice mixed with water and wind, wood mixed with water and soil, lava mixed with earth and fire, storm mixed with water and lightning, boiling mixture of fire and water, dust mixed with soil, wind and fire. There are also unique elements for the anime and medium film, including crystal, darkness, steel and fast. In series, some countries are named after elements (such as "Land of Fire" where Naruto lives). There are also five strong and strong ninja villages that show dominance over smaller villages, each based on the five elements above. In the fourth season, it was revealed that the ninja is not the only one with elemental power and that there are other elements: metal, gravity, nature (referring to plants), smoke, sound, form, poison/toxicity, light, shadow, speed, , water and amber (the ability to absorb or replicate the power of other elements), along with the wind element introduced in season five. They also took inspiration from Greek mythology, especially Jupiter (lightning) and Venus (love). The other set of four (Uranus, Neptune, Pluto, and Saturn) also have power based on their planetary name, but because the first three are unknown from antiquity, their names are derived from Western names and therefore from the Roman myth ( producing "the king of heaven," "the king of the sea," and "the king of the land" respectively). Sailor Uranus uses the power of air and wind, Sailor Neptune uses the power of the sea and ocean, and Sailor Pluto is the Space-Time and the Land Guardian. Typically, Red Ranger represents fire, and Blue Ranger water. For example, Red Turbo Ranger and Red Lightspeed Ranger already have Zords based on fire engines, while Blue Aquitian Ranger has a water-based attack. Gosei Sentai Dairanger is very interesting from Chinese mythology, and five of Mythical Qi Beasts deal with Wu Xing. In Seijuu Sentai Gingaman and Power Rangers Lost Galaxy , five Rangers represent fire (Red), water (Blue), Wind (Green), Lightning (Yellow) and flora (Pink ), with the earth (Black Knight/the Magna Defender) added later.

The elements at Ninpuu Sentai Hurricanger are air (Red), earth (Yellow), water (Blue), with Kuwaga and Kabuto both using the power of lightning. The last two became Thunder Rangers in the Power Rangers Ninja Storm, sharing the elements of thunder, with the Green Samurai Ranger becoming non-elemental (its power dubbed "Green Samurai Power"). The element theme here is used more widely than in the previous series, and Rangers attacks and fighting styles often reflect that. In Mahou Sentai Magiranger and Strength of the Strength of Rangers , MagiRed (Red Ranger) and Wolzard (Wolves) share the fire element. Other Rangers have strength based on thunder (Yellow), water (Blue), air (Pink), earth (Green), ice (White), and light/sun (MagiShine/the Solaris Knight). In Power Rangers: Samurai and Super Samurai's follow-up seasons, five rangers each represent a classic element, though with the forest in place of aether: fire (red), water (blue), sky (pink), earth (yellow) and forest green). Red Ranger also shows the use of lightning. Then when the gold ranger is added, he utilizes the light elements.

The use of elements is not limited to the protagonist. In Kyuukyuu Sentai GoGo-V , the demon Zylpheeza, Drop, Cobolda and Venus (Diabolico, Impus, Loki and Vypra at Power Rangers Lightspeed Rescue respectively) represent one of four elements. In both versions, all monsters are affiliated with one of them, and are associated with the same element.
