History
- The first church
The first service was held at Eden Court (515 Royal York Rd) home of Mr. Edward Stock, one of the three remaining Victorian Houses in Royal York with St. Leo's Rectory, the building recently declared a historic building. Mr. Stock donated the land for the original church in 1895 which opened as a mission of the Holy Family in 1903.
In 1909, St. Leo became a parish serving Swansea south of St. College (now Morningside Ave) and Mimico extension with its original boundaries: Lake Ontario, Humber River, North Queen St (now Delroy Dr) and Mimico Ave (now Kipling Ave). One of the ten famous races held between athletes Tom Longboat and Alf Shrubb takes place for St. Parish picnics. Leo in an old Mimico park in 1912 in the same year. St. Leo extensively expanded the church, doubling its capacity. The victims of St. Leo for the First World War is 1 dead (Pte. Ed Doherty), 5 injured from 30 enlisted. In 1920 the former western part of Mimico became the City of New Toronto, leading in 1924 to the St. Catholic Church building. Teresa and the separation of this area from St. Leo. In 1923 Mimico Town had opened a second public school and in 1926 the parish built the St. Elementary School. Leo across the church on land bought from Mimico's Werden family leading to the formation of the Mimico Separate School Board who often met in the old Rectory, 48 Station Rd across from the Mimico Library. St. Leo Elementary School is the oldest Separate School in Etobicoke that is still open. Like the City of Mimico and other churches, St. Leo got into debt during the Great Depression. With much of the post-war immigration Italy to the northern part of Mimico, in 1947 Separate Middle School Mimico opened a second Catholic school for the northern QEW parish; St. Louis Elementary School was the name suggested by the pastor's name at the time (the first Italian-speaking priest) Fr. Louis Markle. All the early priests Leo serves in the Holy Family's parent church (except Father Markle, whose brother Father Basil Markle serves there). All early but first priests (Pastor Doherty) teach at St. Seminary. Augustine, a tradition run by pastors today.
- Second Church
A new church was built across the street from the old one in 1953 at the location of the post office Mimico 1858. Shortly after, the parish made a concerted effort to buy the next Postmaster House, Werden House, to become a new presbytery. In 1955, St. Catholic Church Markus was built in the neighborhood of Humber Bay and in 1961, the Holy Angels was built for the neighboring neighborhood of Queensway, an area that had been cut off from Mimico by the Queen Elizabeth Way building. After the liturgical change in the Latin Rite leads to the use of regional languages ââ(English) in lieu of Latin, St. Leo began providing separate liturgies for the Italian parish. In 1960 a Parish Hall was built on the site of the Old Church. The two elementary schools were extensively added throughout the 1960s when Mimico was merged with Etobicoke, St. John's parish. Leo replaces the Roman Catholic Church of Our Lady of Sorrows, Kingsway as the oldest Catholic parish in Etobicoke. After full funding for the Catholic School was introduced, the Board of Public Education offered the old Mimico Junior High School to a separate (Catholic) School Council who refused on the grounds that demographic changes at Etobicoke meant Mimico was no longer centrally located.
Four parishes St. Leo has received the Sacrament of Holy Orders: Fr. Jim Passery (ordained in church at the 50th anniversary of the parish), Deacon Ralph Yearsley, Deacon Gord Weiss, and Deacon Alan Morris. One of the most famous members of parish in St. Petersburg. Leo is NHL Hockey Player Brendan Shanahan. St. Leo is also home to the four beavers Lakeshore, Cubs, and Scouts.
