Piezo ignition is a type of ignition used in portable cookers, gas grillers and some matches, and potato cannons. Piezo ignition uses a piezoelectric principle, which, in a nutshell, is an electrical charge accumulated in some materials in response to high pressure. It consists of a small hammer, a spring that, when a button is pressed, hits a PZT crystal or a quartz crystal. Quartz is piezoelectric, which means creating voltage when changing shape. This sudden, powerful deformation produces high voltage and subsequent discharges, which ignite the gas.
No external electrical connection is required, although cables are sometimes used to find locations that trigger away from the crystal itself. The Piezo ignition system can be operated either with lever, pushbutton or inserted into control buttons. An electric spark is usually generated once per turn of a button or press a button.
