A Marine surveyor (including "Yacht & Small Craft Surveyor", "Hull & Surveyor Machine" and/or "Cargo Surveyor") is the person who inspects, surveys or inspects ships to assessing, monitoring and reporting on their condition and products, as well as checking for damage to vessels and cargo. Common tasks of marine surveyors
A marine surveyor can perform the following tasks:
- Conduct a survey throughout the life of the ship (for new vessels, annual surveys, interim surveys, special surveys) to ensure standards are maintained;
- Perform the checks required by domestic law and international conventions by the International Maritime Organization (IMO);

Government surveyor
Government surveyors conduct ship registration surveys, overseas ship surveys and local designs, and generally enforce ship safety standards to ensure the safety of the marine industry. Marine surveyors designated by the government, also called marine inspectors in some countries, belong to two groups that are not separated from each other: Flag State surveyors report to the government with whom the vessels are registered, and Port State surveyor reports to government to the region to which the ship has entered. They can also check cargo equipment to ensure that the equipment meets various requirements or regulations. Government and classification surveyors are usually professional marine seafarers, such as qualified ship masters, engineers, naval architects or radio officers.
Personal surveyor
Personal marine surveyors may be required to undertake a variety of tasks, including checking shiploads or onboard conditions such as fuel quality; investigate accidents at sea (eg oil spills or engine failures or structures that are not considered important); and prepare accident reports for insurance purposes, and conduct a design survey to analyze how much cargo is lost or acquired.
Private surveyors also conduct a condition survey or pre-purchase survey to determine the condition of the vessel before the charter or acquisition.
