Histori

Henderson Township first appeared in 1940 during World War II with the construction of a Basic Magnesium Plant. Henderson quickly became the major supplier of magnesium in the United States, called the "metal miracle" of World War II. The plant supplies the US Department of War with magnesium for gunpowder and aircraft gun, skeleton, and other parts. A quarter of all US wartime magnesium comes from the Henderson Plant to strengthen aluminum, using 25% of Dam Hoover's power to separate metal from its ore by electrolysis. Jim Gibson's mayor Fred D. Gibson is one of the original engineers sent to Britain to learn the secrets of creating a "magic metal" that will ultimately help the United States and its allies win the war. The English liaison officer sent to Henderson, Major Charles Ball, has a street named after him. There was some concern that "St ball," would sound inappropriate, so the street was called "Major Avenue".

Though "born in the American defense", Henderson's future after World War II is uncertain. In 1947, magnesium production was no longer required for defense, and the majority of the 14,000 BMI employees moved out. Enrollment in the school system was reduced by two thirds, and more than half of the townsite homes, built for factory workers, became vacant. In 1947, the United States Asset Administration of War had offered Henderson to be sold as a surplus war property.

In an effort to save the city, the Nevada Legislature spent the weekend visiting Henderson, evaluating the possibilities of the state administration of Magnesium Elementary. Within days of the visit, the legislators unanimously approved the bill giving the Colorado River Commission of Nevada the authority to purchase industrial plants. Governor Vail Pittman signed the bill on 27 March 1947, helping save Henderson from becoming a surplus war property.

With the help of local industry, Henderson was founded on April 16, 1953 as Henderson City. On May 23, 1953, Henderson, with a population of 7,410, chose Dr. Jim French as the first mayor. Initially only about 13 square miles (34 km 2 ) in size, the city quickly began to grow, reaching over 94 square miles (240 km 2 ) in current size.

In 1988, the Pacific Engineering and Production Company in Nevada (PEPCON) rocket fuel plant, in the modern Gibson Springs Henderson neighborhood, was on fire. The fire quickly spread and swallowed the plant, spewed rocket fuel, smoke, and toxic fumes from the building, eventually obliterating it in a large explosion, followed by six smaller explosions. It sends shockwaves throughout Henderson and parts of Las Vegas Valley, destroying glass and destroying buildings. The explosion also caused earthquakes, some of which were more than 3.0 on the Richter scale. Two people were killed, and 372 others were injured.

The PEPCON plant disaster event spurred development in Henderson years later, from the historical industrial development to residential and commercial development. Now there is no sign of the explosion where it happened. Currently, this site consists mostly of office buildings.
