Description

The statue was named after a line in the James Joyce novel Finnegans Wake and was inspired by the funnel shape of the carriage used to load coal into the railway carriage. Smith says the title "comes from the middle of Finnegans Wake called 'The Ondt' - in accordance with the ant-and the 'Gracehoper." In this novel, an animal named 'Gracehoper,' which represents progress, change, and dynamism, takes a role in battle and defeats another mystical beast, 'Ondt,' a hardworking, careful but unimaginative animal. "

Art historian Joan Pachner describes the work of art based on "Smith's vision of the invisible space grid of tetrahedron and alternating octahedron." Smith created Gracehoper in the third edition, with one proof of the artist; which is the second, while the Detroit Art Institute (DIA) has its first collection (Gracehoper (1/3) created by Lippincott, Inc. in 1972). In addition, HE has collected a collection of original cardboard boxes, made in 1961 and painted black.
