Fuel filter - Wikipedia

The fuel filter is a filter in the fuel line filtering out dirt particles and rust from fuel, usually made into cartridges containing filter paper. They are found in most internal combustion engines.

Fuel filters serve vital functions in today's strict and tolerant modern fuel engine systems. Unfiltered fuels can contain several types of contamination, such as paint chips and impurities that have been struck into the tank during filling, or rust caused by water vapor in the steel tank. If these substances are not removed before the fuel goes into the system, they will cause rapid wear and failure of the fuel pump and injector, due to the action of the abrasive particles on the high precision components used in modern injection systems. The fuel filter also improves performance, because the fewer contaminants present in the fuel, the more efficiently it can burn.

Fuel filters need to be maintained periodically. This is usually the case just disconnecting the filter from the fuel line and replacing it with a new one, although some specially designed filters can be cleaned and reused many times. If the filter is not replaced regularly, it may become clogged with contaminants and cause a limitation in the fuel flow, causing a considerable decrease in engine performance as the engine struggles to attract enough fuel to continue running normally.

Some filters, especially found in diesel engines, are designs like bowls that collect water at the bottom (because water is denser than diesel). The water can then be dried by opening the valve at the bottom of the bowl and allowing it to run out, until the bowl contains only diesel. Many fuel filters contain a water sensor to signal to the engine control unit or directly to the driver (lights on the dashboard) if the water reaches a warning level. It is particularly undesirable for water in the fuel to be drawn into the diesel engine fuel system, since the system relies on diesel for moving parts lubrication, and if water enters the moving parts requiring constant lubrication (eg the injector valve), it will quickly cause heat and need not be used. This type of filter may also include a sensor, which will alert the operator when the filter needs to be dried. Near the diesel fuel filter there may be a fuel heater to avoid the formation of paraffin wax (in the case of low temperatures) within filtrating elements that can stop the flow of fuel to the engine.
