Flexor digitorum superficial ( flexor digitorum sublime ) is the extrinsic flexor muscle of the radius at the proximal interphalangeal joint.

It's in the anterior compartment of the forearm. It is sometimes regarded as the deepest part of the superficial layer of this compartment, and is sometimes regarded as a "transitional layer" separate from this compartment. It is relatively common for the missing superficial flexor digitorum of the little finger, bilaterally and unilaterally, which can cause problems when diagnosing a little finger injury.

Structure

Muscles have two heads that are classically described - humeroulnar and radial - and between these heads are the median nerve and ulnar artery trajectory. The ulnar collateral ligament of the elbow joint gives its origin to this part of the muscle.

Four long tendons come out of this muscle near the wrist and walk through the carpal tunnel formed by the flexor retinaculum. This tendon, together with the flexor digitorum profundus, is closed by a general flexor sheath. The tendon attaches to the anterior margin on the base of the middle phalanx of four fingers. This tendon has a split (camping kiasma) at the tip where the flexor digitorum profundus tendon is passed.

Innervation

The superficial muscle of the digitorium flexor is innervated by the median nerve (C7, C8, T1).

Function

The main function of the flexor digitorum superficialis is the flexion of the middle phalanx of the radius in the proximal interphalangeal joint, but under advanced action also flexs the metacarpophalangeal joint and the wrist joint.
