Sonoma State's Emily Rosa: 'I Started Seeing Myself as a Young ...

Emily Rosa (born February 6, 1987) is the youngest person to have a research paper published in a medical journal reviewed by colleagues. At the age of nine, Rosa became pregnant and undertook a therapeutic therapeutic research published in the American Medical Association Journal in 1998. She graduated from Colorado University in Denver in 2009 with a major in psychology. Her parents, Larry Sarner and Linda Rosa, are leaders of Advocates for Children in Therapy advocate group.

In 1996, Rosa saw the video of a practitioner of Therapeutic Touch (TT) claiming that they could feel the "Human Energy Field" (HEF) coming from the human body and could use their hands to manipulate HEF to diagnose and treat illness. He heard Dolores Krieger, co-inventor of Therapeutic Touch, claimed that everyone had the ability to sense the HEF, and Rosa heard other nurses say the Hef felt to them "warm as Jell-O" and "tactile as taffy." Rosa was impressed by how sure the nurses were about their abilities. He said, "I want to see if they can really feel something."

Using a standard science exhibition board, Rosa designed a single-blind protocol, later described by other scientists as "simple and elegant", for a study he did at the age of nine for science science grade 4. There are two test series. In 1996, 15 practitioners were tested at their home or office on different days for several months. In 1997, 13 practitioners, including 7 of the first series, were tested on a single day. The second series was observed and recorded by the Scientific American Frontiers manufacturer. Stephen Barrett, MD, of Quackwatch is a senior writer, his mother (Linda Rosa, RN) is the lead author, and his stepfather (Larry Sarner) served as a statistician when the experiment was written for the American Medical Association Journal. The study, which included extensive literature searches, was published April 1, 1998. George Lundberg, editor of JAMA, is aware of the uniqueness of the situation, saying: "Age is not important. This is good, science is important, and it is science the good one ".

This study tested the ability of 21 TT practitioners to detect HEF when they did not see. Rosa asked each practitioner to sit at the table and reach out their hand through the screen. On the other side of the screen, Rosa randomly selects which from the hands of a TT practitioner she will hold her hand. TT practitioners were then asked which one of their hands detected HEF Rosa. The subjects were each given ten experiments, but they correctly found Rosa's hand on average only 4.4 times. Some subjects were asked before the tests to examine Rosa's hands and choose which hands they thought produced the strongest HEF. Rosa then used the hand during the experiment, but the subjects were no better. The results show that TT practitioners can not detect hands more often than chance, and Rosa et al. It is therefore concluded that there is no empirical basis for the HEF and with the added therapeutic touch:

To our knowledge, no other objective quantitative research involving more than a few TT practitioners has been published, and no well-designed research demonstrates the health benefits of TT. These facts, together with our experimental findings, suggest that the TT claims are groundless and that further TT usage by health professionals is not justifiable.

Reactions

Rosa's trial publication at JAMA is an international media sensation. In an article in The New York Times, Rosa is likened to a child in a short fairy tale "New Emperor's Clothing". The article notes that Rosa's parents and helpers in the project are Linda Rosa, a registered nurse who has been campaigning against TT for nearly a decade, and Larry Sarner, chairman of the National Therapeutic Therapeutic Study Group, an anti-TT organization.

David J Hufford feels that this study presents an ethical issue because the authors of this study requested the cooperation of TT operators by presenting this research as "a fourth-grade science project." Hufford felt that this was a failure of full disclosure and fraud. But Hufford's analysis does not recognize that the first round of tests is , in fact, only a fourth-grade science project undertaken without thinking of future publications. Publications advised by Dr. Stephen Barrett a few months later when he learned that research had been done. The second round of tests was done at the request of Scientific American Frontiers, with the participants fully aware that they were being recorded. No further attempts were made to undo the findings.
