Alternative Learning System is a parallel learning system in the Philippines that provides practical options for existing formal instruction. When a person does not have or can not access formal education in school, ALS is an alternative or a substitute. ALS includes a source of informal and informal knowledge and skills.

The Alternative Learning System requires only learners to attend learning sessions on an agreed schedule between learners and learning facilitators.

The program has two different schemes for instruction: school-based and community-based. In school-based programs, instruction is done on a temporary school campus in a community-based program, formal instruction is conducted in a community room or in private places. The ALS program follows a uniform learning module for all academic subjects covering science, math, English, Filipino, social studies, current events among others. Delivery instructions are provided by instructors paid by the government or by private non-governmental organizations.

In addition to the scheme, the program has two levels: basic and secondary. Students must start at the elementary level, then proceed to the secondary school level. If a student is a primary school graduate under a formal classroom system, students are automatically accepted at the intermediate level depending on the level of the year in which the students stop attending school.

Administration

The program administration is held by the Ministry of Education, a Philippine government agency tasked with providing education to all Filipinos. Private non-government organizations can provide programs but are still under the supervision of Filipino educational institutions.

Upon completion of the program, learners are then assessed by their learning facilitators, and if they are ready, they are given accreditation and equality (A & amp; E) tests that cover all learning paths within the ALS curriculum. Successful examinees are then awarded a certificate equivalent to a formal or secondary level formal school diploma. ALS officials and executives may choose to perform a "graduation" ceremony to demonstrate that the participants have successfully completed the program.

Level

Basic

If a student has not completed elementary school, he or she may be accepted into the program. it must go through the Functional Capabilities Test (FLT) so that the learning facilitator can identify the literacy level. The learning module will be suggested to be the focus relative to the FLT outcomes and interests. The learner will then be guided to reach the Individual Learning Agreement (ILA). The ILA will be their foundation (learner and facilitator) in tracking progress and competencies developed within the learner.

Coverage

The program covers most of the dropouts in primary and secondary schools, out-of-school youth, non-readers, working people and even senior citizens who want to read and write. Students enrolled under the class system are prohibited from participating in the program. Age, economic and personal status are one of the decisive factors in availing programs.

Compared to formal education

ALS evolved from non-formal education that has been done by the Philippine government. Previously, non-formal education was mostly concentrated on instruction in livelihood skills training with basic reading and writing included in the module. Under the current system, skills training and livelihood training have been issued and defined as separate education systems. Skills training has become a stand-alone program with the Technical Education and Skills Development Authority (Philippines) in charge of this program.

ALS is a way for informal and busy students to attain primary and secondary school education without the need to go to attend daily classroom instruction such as the formal education system. Secondary education is now a prerequisite in vocational and higher education technology in the Philippines. Livelihood training, however, does not require formal or non-formal education in the Philippines.
