In larger school systems, the principal is often assisted by someone known as the deputy head of (Republic of Ireland: vice principal ) or assistant head . Unlike the principal, the vice principal does not have enough decision-making authority to be carried out by the principal. Although they still carry almost the same authority among the students, the vice principal does not have the same strength on the board. Experience as a principal assistant is often a prerequisite for progressing to a principal.

Job description
The assistant principal helps the principal in the school administration as a whole. Some assistant principals hold this position for several years to prepare for progress to the main job; the other is the principal career assistant. They are primarily responsible for scheduling student classes, ordering textbooks and supplies, and coordinating transport, custodians, cafeterias, and other support services. They usually deal with discipline and student attendance, social and recreational programs, and health and safety issues. They can also advise students on personal, educational, or vocational issues. With the emergence of location-based management, assistant principals play a greater role in ensuring students' academic success by helping develop new curricula, evaluating teachers, and addressing school-community relationships - responsibilities previously assumed solely by the principal. The number of assistant principals that schools use may vary depending on the number of students.

Education
Most schools require primary, middle, and secondary principals to have a master's degree in educational or leadership administration. Most principals also have experience as teachers. Master's degrees in educational administration are offered at a number of universities in the United States including University of North Texas, Ball State University, Drexel University, Ashland University, Northeastern University, and Scranton University.
Task
In American schools, it's often her job to handle things like student discipline, parent conference meetings, asset inventory and reservations, school improvement planning, bus and lunch supervision, and teacher observation. In addition, the assistant principal often serves as a test coordinator, training staff on procedures related to standard assessment, as well as accounting for materials testing. In addition to these tasks, the assistant principal is an instructional leader.
But most importantly, if something happens to the principal, such as extended leave, the assistant principal will act as a temporary headmaster. Because of this, many see this position as a springboard for a larger role than the principal and are often used as such. In most schools, the vice principal forgets all the teaching assignments to address the wider educational problem.
In the UK, most high schools have a Principal Assistant (or traditionally known as a Principal Assistant), with the Vice Principal (or traditionally known as the Deputy Chief Teacher) managing them. Their assignments vary from school to school; however, principal Assistant Principals and Deputy Principals support school initiatives to maintain standards, behaviors, Key Stages 3-5, teaching and exam timing, inclusion, curriculum and student learning, and overall accountability in schools. They can also conduct performance assessments and teacher observations. In addition, principals/principals/principals/principals begin to have more autonomy on how they will structure their senior school leadership team and the roles of each member. This additional role found in high school English may lead to a senior leadership/administrative team of 8-12, depending on the size of the school and its demographics (eg Head Teacher, 2-4 Vice Principals, 3 -8 Assistant Principals). Unlike the US, most Assistant Chief Teachers and Deputy Head Teachers teach 1-2 courses on their administrative duties.
