The third Rs (as in the letter R ) refers to the foundation of a basic skill-oriented education program at school: r eading, w r iting and r ithmetic. It appeared in the print media as a space filler in "The Lady's Magazine" for 1818, although it is widely cited as arising from a phrase created in a speech given by Sir William Curtis, Member of Parliament, in about 1795. Although all three are used in Chapters 13, Book 1 of the Confessions Aurelius Augustine, the literal translation is "For the first, where reading, and writing, and counting are being studied." (nam illas prima, yam legere et scribere et numerare discitur) Since its original creation, many others have used the term to describe other trifecta.

Origin and meaning
The phrase "Three R" may have come from a previous speech by Sir William Curtis in 1795.
Additional versions of the three Rs are mentioned by some in modern times as "literate, numeracy and ICT literacy skills" can be found in modern English education systems.
There are previous references to "reading, writing, and arithmetic" in St. Augustine of Hippo Confessions (c.397-401):
Even now I have not found a reason why I hate Greek literature when I was taught as a child. Latin I am very loving, not at the stage of my main teacher but at the secondary level taught by literary teachers called 'grammarian' ( grammatici ). Early elements, where people learn three Rs of reading, writing, and arithmetic , I feel less burden and suffering than the whole set of Greek classes.

Etymology
The phrase 'three R' is used because every word in the phrase has a strong (sound) phrase R at the beginning. The term is ironic, because someone with an imperfect language education will know that two of the original words do not really begin with the letter R . The third R is more likely to be reckoning, unlike typically declared 'Ritematika'. Reckoning is a Victorian term for mental arithmetic and has been used as such since the 14th century. Education expert Louis P. BÃÆ' à © nÃÆ' à © zet prefers to "read," "reason," "recite," adding, "by reciting I do not mean to give back, word for word, teacher or textbook words. I speak English. "
In the United States, during the seventeenth century, the curriculum in the public schools (base) of the New England colonies was summarized as "four R" - Readings, "Riting," Ritematics ", and Religion.
