The Lakes is the largest community of 2 square miles (5.2 km km 2 ) located within the city limits of Las Vegas, Nevada. Located in the western part of Las Vegas Valley near the Spring Mountains and Red Rock Canyon National Conservation Area. The heart of the community, and its name, is a man-made lake, Lake Sahara. Originally planned to have two artificial lakes but down to one. It was built from the mid-1980s to the mid-1990s, and at that time was on the edge of development in the valley. It consists of a mixture of gated communities consisting of large family homes, condominia, commercial and office areas.
This community is bordered by Sahara Avenue to the North, Durango Drive to the east, Desert Inn Road to the South, and Hualapai Way to the West. Several other well-known communities are nearby, including Summerlin to the west and Peccole Ranch and Canyon Gate to the north.

Citicards , a subsidiary of Citibank, was located at its main Payment Processing Center here in 1985, as the community center of The Lakes. The United States Postal Service has since made two ZIP codes to handle the large volume of letters involved. In an effort to avoid the negative connotation of credit card payments to Las Vegas, these ZIP codes have been named places of The Lakes, Nevada. Citibank shifted its center for credit processing in the late 2000s, and closed the facility in 2014.
