Ringkasan plot
This story takes place in an unnamed school classroom in the United States, after a war between the US and an unnamed country. It is implied that America has been defeated and occupied. The story opened with the previous teacher leaving the classroom, was removed from his position and replaced with a foreign force agent. New teachers have been trained in propaganda techniques, and are responsible for re-educating children to support their invaders. During the course of the story, children are persuaded to abandon their religion and national allegiance. Framing stories is the fact that, while children have ritually recited a "Pledge of Allegiance" every morning, no one knows what it really means. Master does not stop acting positively about the change, offering candy, songs, and praise to the children. When asked if the war was won or lost, he simply replied that "we won," implying that everyone would benefit from conquest.
Only one student was initially hostile to a new teacher, a boy named Johnny, whose father had been arrested and placed in a re-education camp. At first, he defended his father, but when he was honored by the teacher with a position of authority in the classroom, he quickly accepted the new regime and committed himself to not receiving "wrong thoughts." The story lasts for a span of twenty-five minutes.

In this short story, Clavell touches on many important concepts like freedom, religion, and patriotism.
Yukio Aoshima, who translated the novel into Japanese, advised him to follow the La Derni̮'̬re Classe ( Last Class ) at Contes du Lundi ( 1873) by Alphonse Daudet. In these words 1500 words talk about the changes that will occur in French Alsace when Germany takes over.
Clavell wrote this story after talking to his six-year-old daughter who had just returned from school. Her daughter, Michaela, was explaining how she had learned the Pledge of Allegiance and she was struck by the thought that, even though she had memorized the promise, she did not know what the words meant.
Clavell finished by writing:
During that day I asked all kinds of people of all ages, "You know 'I promise faithful...', but before I can finish it, soon they all go around, the words are almost always the same blur In each case I find that not a teacher - or anyone else - ever explains those words to any of them.Everyone has only to learn it to say it.The Children's Story appeared that day.It was then that I realized how vulnerable my child's mind - the mind whatever - under controlled circumstances. Usually I write and rewrite and rewrite, but this story comes quickly - almost by itself. Nearly three words have been changed, I am so much to keep asking me questions... What kind of question is' I pledge faithfulness' without understanding? Like why is it so easy to distract and inculcate others? What is freedom and why is it so difficult to d Explain The Children's Story keeps asking me all sorts of questions that I can not do swer. Maybe you can - then your kids will...
Television adaptation
This short story was adapted in 1982 as an installment in the anthology TV series Showcase Car . Princess Clavell (Michaela referenced above, known professionally as Michaela Ross during her brief acting career) plays a seemingly delightful young teacher sent to indoctrinate American children's classes.
