History
Minnesota's first schoolhouse was built in Stillwater in 1848, a year before Minnesota became a territory. Stillwater became the country's first school district just two years later.
From the first one-bedroom school, Stillwater Area Public Schools has grown to serve more than 8,300 students in 7 elementary schools (PreK-5), two secondary schools (grades 6-8), one secondary school (grades 9-12), and center alternative learning for high school students. Early family centers serve families with small children, from birth to 5 years of age.

The district spans 30 miles (48 km) along the St. Croix from the Sea at St. Croix south to Afton, and covers about 150 square miles (390 km 2 ). The district includes 18 communities, including: Afton, Bayport, Baytown Township, Grant, parts of Hugo, Lake Elmo, Lakeland, Lakeland Shores, Lake St. Croix, Marine in St. Croix Croix, May Township, Oak Park Heights, St. Mary's Point, Stillwater, Stillwater Township, West Lakeland Township, Withrow, and partly Woodbury.

-87% of graduates continue to 2 or 4 years of college/university in 2012-13.
- Approximately 1,000 students earn college credits every year while attending the Stillwater Area Public School.
-Students (at all grade levels) consistently perform above the state and national averages on achievement tests.
- Recurrent acknowledgment from AP College Board in the academic year 2013 where 101 students are named AP Recipients, 73 AP Scholars with Honors, 71 AP Scholars with Distinctions and three others named AP National Scholars.
-Since 1913, Stillwater already has nearly 60 State Championships State League State League in the field of athletics.
- Exceptional music programs (bands, orchestras, and choirs) are highly respected across the country: The Concert Wind Symphony has the longest-ranked superior ratings in Minnesota history.
-Derek Olson, a sixth-grade teacher at Afton-Lakeland Primary School, represents the state of Minnesota as Teacher of the Year 2008.
