Hutong School (Mandarin: ???? ) is a Chinese teaching school and internship provider in China founded in March 2005 by a team of French businessmen, German, Korean, Flemish, and Chinese. This is the first Mandarin-speaking school under foreign management officially licensed by the Chinese Ministry of Education. It provides Chinese language courses and matches students with internships in China and has welcomed more than 8,000 students and internships to China.

History

Hutong School was founded in 2005 and started in a small office in the Beijing hutong, inspiring the name of the school. Then, in 2006, Jeremie Rossignol, one of the founders led the remodeling project of an old traditional courtyard in Shuangsi Hutong.

The Hutong School begins with the introduction of the Internship Program. About two years after its founding, in 2007, Hutong School began offering intensive Chinese classes in addition to an internship placement. In 2009, Hutong School welcomed the 1000 students, and continued growth led to the decision to open a second office in Beijing.

In 2010, the Hutong School network counted 200 partner companies, including various chambers of commerce. This sustainable growth enabled the agency to open branches in Sanlitun in the same year. In 2012, Hutong School invested heavily in opening a large office in Shanghai, where they offered the same program options as in Beijing. The company later acquired InternAsia, where they quickly built a large network in Shanghai to offer its students several opportunities. Due to the fact that the exclusive hutong for Beijing, the name of the Hutong School is questionable. However, the traditional Shanghai office environment reflects the feel of these small alleys in Beijing, so the name is kept.

In 2013, Hutong School began to expand its business on an international scale. With the opening of facilities in Brussels, Belgium, Hutong School became the first Chinese private school to teach Mandarin in China and the West. Further openings in other European cities such as Milan and London followed in 2014. In cooperation with other companies, the institute now provides Mandarin lessons in Paris, Sydney and Moscow. In 2016, the school opened in Guadalajara, Mexico, and in January 2017 opened an additional offices based in China in Hangzhou, extending its flagship program to this rapidly growing and popular city.

Mandarin Intensive Program

Hutong School in China offers an intensive Chinese language program consisting of 20 hours of language classes per week. Students are taught in small groups, although private classes are available on request. Hutong School uses a unique teaching method designed specifically to adapt to Western students by separating the spoken Chinese from character recognition. Students can choose the duration of the program and customize it to suit their needs and goals. Students can choose a full-service package that includes accommodation, assistance services, and participation in a variety of cultural activities.

Internship Program

The Internship Program is designed to provide international students with the opportunity to gain work experience in China. The school reviews their students' and company's network applications in Beijing, Shanghai and Hangzhou to seek an apprenticeship position that complements the educational background, skills and objectives of the students. In addition, the school provides a service pack to ensure a smooth arrival and a comfortable stay. Positions are available in various sectors, including Finance, Sales, Marketing, Business Development, Translation, NGOs and more. Students who choose a full service program will meet at the airport and be taken to the Hutong School accommodation. Students also have the opportunity to take part in typical Chinese cultural activities such as calligraphy courses, Chinese cooking classes and Tai Chi classes.

In addition, all apprentices receive 4 hours of Mandarin classes per week. Internships are usually available in the cities of Beijing, Shanghai and Hangzhou.

Summer Camp Program

Hutong School offers a Summer Camp Program for young students aged between 14-17 years. This two-week camp enables young students to find Beijing or Shanghai and learn Mandarin in a safe and fully supervised environment. After starting camp in Beijing, a camp was launched in Shanghai in 2018 to meet growing demand.

Family Camp

The School runs the Family Camp from the Beijing and Shanghai branches, designed to give families 3 different holiday types. During the 2-week camp, the family will learn Chinese with school teachers during the morning, and explore the city during the afternoon.

Custom Created Programs

Hutong School prides itself on providing flexible and customizable programs to help its students achieve their goals in China. Students can contact the school to request programs designed specifically for their group or family. Examples of past programs are; Traditional Chinese Massage Teaching Program for Jeju National University and staff outing for the Royal Netherlands Embassy.

HSK Exam Center

Hutong School Shanghai has been a licensed HSK Center since 2015. Students can take HSK exam with Shanghai Hutong School every month. Schools also provide HSK preparation courses.

Location

China

Hutong School currently offers Intensive Chinese Language and Internship programs in Beijing, Hangzhou and Shanghai. These branches also offer general Mandarin classes to anyone who wants to study with a job, or while on vacation. In addition to this, the Beijing and Shanghai branches offer Summer Camp, Family Camp, and Special Program.

Outside of China

Hutong School has three locations outside China in Brussels, London and Moscow. These locations are usually designed for preparatory courses taken by previous students for their Chinese immersion.
