Element of Light

Element of Light is the fifth studio album by singer-songwriter Robyn Hitchcock and the second with his Egyptian support band. It was released in 1986.

Most of the albums were recorded on Alaska Studios and Berry Street, but two songs, "The President" and "Lady Waters & The Hooded One", were live recordings made for the BBC, with overdubs recorded on BBC Mobile and in Alaska.

The dominating flavor of the album is dominated by the song "Airscape", which provides in the lyrics of the album's title. "Airscape" has been quoted several times by Hitchcock as a favorite among its own compositions, and live views are marked on the next CD edition. "Airscape" concerns its 'favorite beach' located on the Isle of Wight, and provides the background for cover shots.

Other songs include a variety of lyrical themes: piscine "Bass" spins invaratively through litany of fish and seabirds, "Ted, Woody & Junior" mocks the bodybuilding magazine homoeroticism, and "Winchester" pays a real respects to the English city located on the main train line between London and the Lymington terminal, which connects to the Isle of Wight.

The song "President" refers to Ronald Reagan's visit to Bitburg, where members of the Waffen-SS are buried.

Originally running into ten songs, the first CD edition included an additional bonus track, all taken from the single, while the pressure then has added six more, including the spoken comedy "The Can Opener".

The album was produced on its own with input from old colleague Pat Collier.
