American Idol
Daughtry auditioned for American Idol in Denver, Colorado, with The Box Tops "The Letter"; he is portrayed as a young rocker with southern and hard rock influences. He passed the audition with a separate decision: approved by Paula Abdul and Randy Jackson, not approved by Simon Cowell. Simon feels that Daughtry at that time was too robotic. After being given a Golden Ticket to Hollywood, he performed "The First Cut Is the Deepest", and sang "Emotion" during his performance with Ace Young and Bobby Bullard. The song for the acappella appearance of Daughtry remained unknown until American Idol Rewind aired in Hollywood's 5-week Season, when it was shown that she sang Elton John 'Your Song'.

At the welcome party, Daughtry says he refused the offer, but, he said, "he still wants to work with them somewhere on the street."
Daughtry's appearance on March 21 caused controversy when he sang minor minor songs from Johnny Cash's "I Walk the Line", based on a cover song by a live band originally recorded for the 2001 tribute album Good Rockin 'Tonight: The Legacy of Sun Records . Both Daughtry and the jury (who uniformly praised the show) recorded the Live version, making it appear to some viewers and critics who say that Daughtry is trying to override that arrangement as his own. In an interview with Entertainment Weekly, Daughtry defended himself, saying "It's not my deed." You say a lot of things in a pretaped interview, and when editing is involved, things get cut off for time constraints. mentioned in my interview that I was doing a different version of the band that I really respected.Final singer Live, Ed Kowalczyk, called me to say, 'Man, do not listen to that.'... It's really cool to get that kind of respect. "On August 2, 2008 at Tom's River Fest in Tom's NJ, Daughtry, Kowalczyk, and Live performed Live" I Walk the Line "together.

An astonished Daughtry can only say, "A little, yes." The media gained a surprise release and there was some controversy about the accuracy of the vote count on the night Daughtry was omitted. The DialIdol vote counting website, however, estimates that Daughtry is the lowest vote for a week. In an interview after elimination, Daughtry said that he thought he got a vote because his fans were "too confident" that he would be safe, so they did not call and vote. Later, he declared the best advice he had ever received was, "Do not believe your own hype," probably nodded toward his surprise American Idol elimination.
During the Season Five Final on May 24, 2006, at Kodak Theater in Hollywood, Daughtry performed the song "Mystery" with the band Live. The Live version of the song was then available for download on the band's MySpace.com profile with Chris Daughtry performing backup vocals.
