Following the use of training films and other visual aids during World War II, audiovisual technology gradually developed in sophistication and use into a wider range of educational institutions such as schools, colleges, universities, museums and galleries, as well as in tourist destinations.
Children learn best by observing and imitating adult behavior. It is therefore evident that learning is more effective when sensory experiences are stimulated. These include images, slides, radios, videos, and other audiovisual tools. According to Webster's dictionary, audio-visual aids are defined as "training or educational materials directed at the senses of hearing and the senses of sight, film, recording, photographs, etc. Used in classroom instruction, library collections, or the like.". The concept of audiovisual aids is not new and can be traced back to the seventeenth century when John Amos Comenius (1592-1670), a Bohemian educator, introduced the image as a teaching aid in his Orbis Sensualium Pictus ("Sensual World image") illustrated by 150 pictures of everyday life. Similarly, Jean Rousseau (1712-1778) and JH Pestalozzi (1746-1827) advocated the use of visual material and play in teaching. Recently, audiovisual aids were also used extensively during and after World War II by the armed services. The successful use of images and other visual aids in the US armed forces during World War II proved the effectiveness of instructional tools. There are different types of audiovisual materials ranging from filmstrips, microforms, slides, projected opaque materials, tape recordings and flashcards. In today's digital world, audiovisual aids have grown exponentially with some multimedia such as educational DVDs, PowerPoint, educational television series, YouTube, and other online materials. The purpose of audio-visual assistance is to improve teachers' ability to present lessons in a simple, effective and easy to understand way for students. Audiovisual materials make learning more permanent because students use more than one sense. It is important to create awareness for federal states and ministries of education as policymakers in secondary schools from the need to instill audiovisual resources as the main pedagogical teaching in the curriculum. The result is to promote audiovisual material in high school because they do not have the resources to produce it. Visual instruction makes abstract ideas more concrete for learners. This is to provide a basis for schools to understand the important role in encouraging and supporting the use of audiovisual resources. In addition, studies have shown that there is a significant difference between the use and not using audiovisual material in teaching and learning.

Considering that every teaching and learning situation varies, so it is important to know that all concepts can not be effectively learned through audiovisuals. Most of the time equipment such as projectors, speakers and headphones are rather expensive so some schools can not afford it. It takes a lot of time for teachers to prepare lessons for having an interactive class session. Also valuable time teachers can be lost in getting familiar with new equipment. Some students may feel reluctant to ask when a movie is playing and in a small room can be a physical barrier. In places where electricity is not available in rural areas, it is impossible to use audio-visual aids that require electricity.

It is clear that audio visual aids are an essential tool for teaching and learning. It helps teachers to present lessons effectively and students learn and retain better concepts and for longer durations. The use of audio visual aids enhances students' critical and analytical thinking. It helps to remove the abstract concept through a visual presentation. However, improper and unplanned use of these tools can have a negative effect on learning outcomes. Therefore, teachers should be well trained through in-service training to maximize the benefits of using these tools. The curriculum should be designed in such a way that there is an option for activity-based learning through audio-visual aids. In addition, the government must fund resources to purchase audio-visual aids at schools.
